Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

An evidence-based approach that combines mindfulness with work on values and psychological flexibility.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach whose effectiveness has been demonstrated across a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression and substance use. It sits within a broader body of clinical science pointing to the usefulness of mindfulness and values in supporting wellbeing. ACT is a hybrid approach, drawing on mindfulness, Gestalt therapy and humanistic-existential thought.

The paradox ACT rests on

Radical acceptance of what cannot be changed is what gives us the power to recognise and change what we can influence. The ACT approach therefore involves accepting necessary suffering — which in turn frees us to make more of the choices that engage us in living, and that let us live in line with our deepest values.

I have completed extensive training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, including with Russ Harris and Kelly G. Wilson.
